Wizkid’s Starboy Record Label Has Been The Biggest Failure In The Music Industry — Do You Agree?

Published

In the industry, there is Wizkid, and then there’s everybody else.

For years now, the 31-year-old star has been playing in a league of his own.

He has enjoyed immense success in his career and has championed a revolution that has seen afro-pop become something of global recognition. It’s like everything he touches turns to gold. Except that is not always the case.

One venture of Wizkid’s that has suffered greatly and refused to take off is his Starboy Entertainment music outfit which he would have loved to make into a great record label in the same way Olamide did YBNL. But that didn’t quite happen for him.

The Early Days Of Starboy Records

In the early days of the label, he had one artist, L.A.X, who was very talented (still is). LA had all it takes to follow in the footsteps of Wiz and become an even greater artist. But that was never going to happen.

The record label just didn’t have the infrastructure to make that happen for him. Before we knew it, the youngster was sidelined, his career, almost ruined. It took him half a decade to get some relevance back.

Around 2016, when Wizkid would frequent Ghana, he had the pleasure of working closely with some artists like the Ghanaian sensation, Efya.

He met Mr. Eazi then and they seemingly formed a partnership, and he probably would have had a shot at signing him to Starboy Records (there were even rumors that he had), but that never happened. Mr. Eazi had dreams, and WizKid was all about his own career that was beginning to take off on an international level.

The Rise And Fall Of Terri

Then finally in 2019, he signed another young artist. This time, for real, with contracts and all that.

The kid, christened Starboy Terri was quickly accepted by the fanbase and he had his debut during the lockdown in 2020. Wizkid seemed involved, but that wasn’t for long. In October of 2020, he released his album and was everywhere promoting it. He still is.

By the time 2021 ended, Terri was apparently no longer with WizKid and that relationship had come to its inevitable end. Now, Wizkid’s Starboy Entertainment is just there, an empty venture that Wizkid could never get off the ground.

In the past, quite a number of artists have failed at getting a record label off ground (D’banj, 2Baba, etc) but not all of them have had the shots Wizkid has had. He has had more than one opportunity to make Starboy into something that would outlive him, but clouded by his success and overwhelmed by the extent of his great career, he just couldn’t get it done. It’s a shame really.

Well, what do you think?
