Everett Meserve was arrested and charged with murder for beating to death his neighbor, but according to court records, his health deteriorated in jail and he passed away in April.
A Portland man who was in custody awaiting a murder trial passed away earlier this year after contracting COVID-19 at least twice, which revealed that he had throat cancer, according to the guy’s lawyer.
According to a death certificate, Everett Meserve passed away on April 15 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. He was 62. The tracheostomy dislodgement was the primary cause of severe respiratory failure.
Meserve’s death, according to his court-appointed attorney Rob Andrews, was the consequence of an attempt on his own life. He was discovered unconscious on the floor of the hospital wing at Maine State Prison in Warren after removing a breathing tube that had been inserted in his throat.
Meserve was detained in August 2019 for allegedly attacking 63-year-old Rodney Cleveland, who resided across the hall from Meserve in a Danforth Street apartment complex for people who had been chronically homeless for a long time.
Cleveland Passed Away
On August 3, Cleveland’s wife found him badly hurt and bleeding, and she immediately dialed 911. A few weeks later, Cleveland passed away.
Meserve decided to go to the police station for an interview after an officer saw that he had blood on his hands, face, and clothing.
Interviews with building occupants and CCTV images from the inside of the corridor outside both flats were used in the inquiry. Police evidence indicated that Meserve and Cleveland were both drunk that morning.
The video, according to the police, indicated that another neighbor had checked on Cleveland around 7:30 am and discovered him to be “very inebriated.” Cleveland, according to the neighbor, was angry with Meserve because Cleveland believed Meserve had seen the eviction notice that had been left on Cleveland’s door the day before.

After an hour, Meserve could be seen on the video entering Cleveland’s apartment with no possessions and just a pair of camouflage pants on. After another hour had gone, Meserve was shown on camera returning to his own apartment while carrying an unidentified object out of the building.
Later on, Cleveland’s wife discovered him. Later on, investigators discovered suspected hair and blood spatters on a frying pan in the living room.
Meserve was charged with murder by a grand jury; he entered a not-guilty plea in October, and a judge ordered that he be kept without bond at the Cumberland County jail.
