George Herring (May 23, 1936 – November 30, 2022) was a scholar of American foreign policy and the author of a seminal history of the Vietnam War that clarified for generations of readers the reasons the United States entered the conflict and the lessons it learned from it. He was 86 and passed away on November 30 at his home in Lexington, Kentucky.

In Blacksburg, Virginia, where his father was the wrestling coach at Virginia Tech, George Cyril Herring Jr. was born on May 23, 1936. His mother worked in education.

In 1957, Dr. Herring graduated with a bachelor’s in history from Roanoke College. Prior to continuing his history studies at the University of Virginia, where he earned a master’s in 1962 and a doctorate in 1965, he served in the Navy for two years.

Herring received his BA from Roanoke College after being born and reared in Blacksburg, Virginia. George spent two years in the US Navy before enrolling in the University of Virginia, where he graduated with an MA and a Ph.D. in history.

Herring served as an alumni professor of history at the University of Kentucky from 1969 until his retirement in 2005. He also taught at Ohio University from 1965 to 1969.

Herring served as the editor of Diplomatic History, a member of the Department of the Army Historical Advisory Committee, and president of the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations in addition to teaching and authoring a number of books. Additionally, he served on the boards of the UK Library Associates, the Kentucky Humanities Council, and the Henry Clay Memorial Foundation.

The marriage of Dr. Herring and Nancy Walton ended in divorce. In 1995, he married Leathers.

John Herring and Lisa Harris, both of Lexington, his two children from his first marriage, as well as six grandkids, round out the survivors in addition to his wife.
