On Saturday, October 15, Jay O. Light, who served as dean of Harvard Business School (HBS) from 2005 to 2010, passed away from cancer at his South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, home. Age-wise, he was 81. When Jay Light was executive dean for administration during Light’s tenure, Angela Crispi remarked, “Jay came at the recession like the expert he was.”

He was a talented case writer and course developer, loved teaching and interacting with his students (even after they graduated), and generously mentored more junior faculty members. As Dean, Light guided HBS through some of its most significant and trying moments. As the global economic crisis developed in 2008, Light moved quickly to fortify the School’s financial foundation.
He organized a group of HBS faculty members who were experts in finance and economics to promote research into the causes of the crisis, creating seminars as well as new course materials and courses that gave students a deeper understanding of risk management, financial regulation, and changes in the capital markets.

Ever the teacher, he also organized a group of HBS alumni to support the research. After receiving his doctorate from Harvard’s joint program in decision and control theory, Light joined the Business School faculty in 1970. He quickly established himself as a talented and gifted educator as well as a creative course creator. Jay was the first faculty member to receive the new Excellence in Teaching Award for his work in the first-year MBA Program only two years into his appointment.
He loved interacting with students as much as they loved learning from him, and this relationship lasted long after they graduated. Many people credit Light with having the biggest impact on their HBS experience and careers.
