A Liberal Democrat peer and former MP Nigel Jones died at the age of 74.
Lord Nigel Jones was a former Cheltenham MP, who passed away at the age of 74. His aide, Andrew Pennington, was assassinated in January 2000 while protecting him from a samurai sword assault.
At the Lord Jones’ constituency office in Cheltenham, resident Robert Ashman launched the assault. During the event, Lord Jones suffered severe injuries to his hand and required 57 stitches. He died on November 7, 2022.

Fellow Liberal Democrat peer Don Foster, Baron Foster of Bath, paid tribute to Lord Jones, saying he,
“He was always there, always good fun”.
Baron Foster told BBC West that Lord Jones was a really hard-working constituency MP, I know he was very well-loved. ” His majority used to go up election after election until he retired in 2005 and went into the House of Lords. “But of course, the shadow over everything was when that attack happened in 2000.”
Baron Foster continued: “It’s a great loss, he was just one year and one day younger than me, and he was loved by so many people.” He added that he had been in contact with Lord Jones via WhatsApp right up until he went into the operating theatre.
Nigel Jones was elected Member of Parliament for Cheltenham in 1992 and was re-elected twice more until 2005.
He was a Gloucestershire county councilor from 1989 to 1993 before becoming a Liberal Democrat MP. In 2005, he was appointed a life peer and given the title Baron Jones of Cheltenham.
Nigel Jones was 74 years old at the time of his demise. He holds British nationality and he belongs to the white ethnicity.
