Nelida Pinon was a Brazilian writer who was the first woman president of the Brazilian Academy of Letters and the first woman to win the Juan Rulfo Prize for Literature from Latin America and the Caribbean.

The news of the death of Brazilian Writer Nelida Pinon has saddened everyone around the globe. According to her publishing firm, she passed away in Lisbon on December 17, 2022, at the age of 85. Although many believe she passed away from old age, her cause of death has not yet been publicly disclosed.

She was the first woman and Brazilian to receive Mexico’s Juan Rulfo Prize for Literature from Latin America, and the Caribbean.

She was known for serving in a variety of capacities in her home city’s cultural institutions and has worked as an editor for a number of Brazilian periodicals.

Numerous literary accolades, including the Premio Juan Rulfo and the Premio Principe de Asturias de las Letras. Have been given to her large body of work, which has been published in more than 20 nations.

Piñon was born on May 3, 1937, in Rio de Janeiro to her Spanish parents. Her parents were Galician immigrants.  She was 85 years old. When she was ten years old, she and her family relocated to Galicia for multiple stays in the tiny country town where her father was grown.

Thus, she picked up Galician, and her time in Spain had a big impact on her later writing. She was inspired by her father. Who granted her an account setup at a nearby Rio de Janeiro bookstore, to pursue her love of reading and writing.
